Question: Moving to Manhattan from Egypt. How much do I need to stay 1 year without working?

I'm 18 and a senior in high school. I want to move to NYC next summer. I can't afford college. (Read: I don't want my parents spending so much money on my going to college. i.e. I don't want to feel like a burden even tho technically I can't be.)

Anyway. I can't work normal jobs, and can't go to school there. What visa can I get to live there for a bit? (Not a tourist one.) Can I make a living off freelance writing? Like writing stories and just selling them. Or do I still need a work visa/green card for that? What about paintings?

I know this is a crazy idea and I might sound hideously naive, but if I got $25000 will I be able to make a living for myself and my mum? I forgot to mention my mum might very well come along with me.

Thanks for your time guys.

Only very been to New York a few times, but its pretty common knowledge that New York is one of the most expensive places to live in the whole western hemisphere. I would say no, but I'm sure with a bit of research you'll be much more knowledgeable about this topic than me. Try somewhere else that isn't New York maybe.
